I think other reviewers have mentioned this, but the hinge is plastic-on-plastic and doesn't always give a steam-proof seal when you close the lid. Reach to turn the kettle off with the spout facing you (as I just did) and a jet of steam can hit your hand. Obviously not best practice for health & safety anyway, but I avoided the spout and got a surprise blast where the steam leaked from the hinge area. Just something to be aware of. Still reckon the kettle is 4 stars for overall value. The plasticky smell is weaker, too - or I am getting used to it!

For the price this kettle is very good value, no doubt about it. Any reservations must bear value in mind, and I do have a few. First, you can't ignore the plasticky smell. A bit like an old-fashioned hot water bottle, even after the recommended three boil-and-empty sessions.
