Reviews for Kenwood SKM100 Traditional Kettle (Kitchen & Home) Had to buy a new kettle becuase my other one broke but I had it about 10 years. This Kenwood is brilliant, can't fault it and it looks good in the kitchen.
Reviews for Kenwood SKM100 Traditional Kettle (Kitchen & Home) What can you say about a kettle ?

Holds water ?! Boils it ?! Made in China ?!

I chose this product for 2 reasons (i) aesthetics and (ii) because I prefer a traditional design over a jug kettle which I tend to find more uncomfortable and unstable in use.

When it arrived I was pleased as unusually the picture does not do it justice. It is an elegant and attractive item and a clever and modern update of a timeless design. It looks modern , not old fashioned, but keeps all the traditional virtues of an old aga kettle including unusually for these items a spout big enough and designed to be filled from the tap (aswell as through the lid) and is comfortable and easy to use. The only gripe I would have is that the somewhat phallic on/off switch that protrudes from the rear like a wagging tail might be prone to breakage in a lively rough-handling household. This no doubt will be changed to a rocker switch or a concealed switch though in future updates of the design.

It also does not hold much water (1.6l claimed) which I initially viewed as a disadvantage but after using a couple of times now regard as a distinct advantage. Unless you have continuous need to boil large quantities of water, which most people will not, this is undoubtedly more efficient, less wasteful and quicker for being on the smaller side (and you could probably boil 2 kettles full anyway in the time it would take to boil a single kettle with a larger capacity).

I had viewed with some sceptisism reviews of other kettles purported by the reviewers to be noisy,as boiling water is just boiling water after all, but I had the advantage of comparing this one with my trusty Russell Hobbs which we had had for 14 years and has been excellent and which I would happily have bought again had an equivalent design been available but which had begun to leak. The noise difference was remarkable. The Kenwood was much quieter I can only assume because of the more compact nature of the design of the water chamber.

So , good if you want something traditional in approach that looks nice but not incongruous in a homely or modern setting and don't need large capacity. Not good if you are after a jug kettle, have a very modern designed kitchen or a huge family that needs large quantities of water boiled at any one time.

So what can you say about this kettle ?

Holds water and boils it (well). (Well) made in China, like almost every electrical appliance nowadays. Looks better in the flesh than in its portrait. Good value for what it is comparatively.
Reviews for Kenwood SKM100 Traditional Kettle (Kitchen & Home) Our old kettle failed as well as the spare one! This kettle meets all our requirements. It is the right shape, the right finish and it boils quickly. Plus it looks good.
